What is your business motto?
To “cut out the jargon”
We aim to make finance and accounting accessible and understandable for all.
Why did you go into your chosen career?
To be frank I left University not knowing what I was going to do – I’d studied law but decided not to progress it as a career. So having taken some time out I decided that I would like to have the back up of a postgraduate qualification and have always been reasonable with numbers I went down the route of management accounting.
Roll forward 20 years and I took the plunge into setting up a business of my own because I felt jaded by the corporate world and really wanted to explore how I could work with and help lots more businesses and people.
What makes your business different?
We are unique in combining Finance Director level support to clients with our training business – making finance and accounting more accessible and understandable.
What essential item(s) do you always have with you?
Earphones – I love to listen to podcasts and music whilst I’m working.
Do you dress up or dress down for business?
Smart casual is our style – I really believe what you wear should represent who and what you are.
Which person has inspired you the most in your career and in what way?
A boss that I had when I worked for Lloyds Banking Group – it was him that encouraged me to think differently about my career, what constituted success and also sewed the seed to start my own business.
What is your proudest achievement in business?
I have won a couple of awards along the way but my biggest satisfaction is that the business is continuing to go from strength to strength 5 years on from when I formed it, so many businesses don’t make it that far.
What’s your company’s greatest asset?
Our brand-new digital training hub – it’s a self-paced system designed to help a whole range of people increase their confidence with regards to finance and accounting in a business context and something we are hugely proud of.
If you hadn’t gone down your chosen career path, what would you be doing?
I would have loved to have been a sportsman, but that ship has sailed. I’m fairly sure I would have been in some sort of management role somewhere.
Give us one tip for a successful business
To plan. Effective planning enables so much – it helps you to make better decisions, to test and validate your thinking and crucially to celebrate successes – something that is so important because there will always be tougher days as well so having something to keep you going is great.
At what time of the day are you most creative and inspired?
I’m definitely most effective in a morning, I’m a fairly early riser and find that’s when I’m at my best.
I also find that my brain processes things subconsciously so downtime and holidays and time away are great ways for me to energise.
How do you relax away from work?
Walks with my dog. I’ve got an 11-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer who loves long walks in the countryside around where we live and I love going out with him.
What makes your blood boil?
Rudeness and a lack of respect from others. There’s no need for it.
Why should businesses prioritise investing time and money into digital technologies?
The technology that is available now is phenomenal and it is only going to get better. If you don’t invest time and money, be sure that your competitors are and they will leave you behind.
Why should businesses attend your webinar?
It’s a well-worn phrase to “know your numbers” can be a key to helping your business to succeed.
