From farms in Spain to factories in Ghana, Xerogrid helps people harness solar, wind, and battery technology to power their off-grid lives and businesses. Using traditional methods to manage and optimise their renewable energy systems the business recognised the need for digital innovation to fuel business growth.
THE CHALLENGE
For years Xerogrid relied on traditional methods to manage and optimise their renewable energy systems. For owner Ian Emberton and his team, this meant hours of hands-on work and no easy way to collect real-time accurate data.
With projects spanning the UK, Europe, West Africa and the Caribbean, there was a pressing need for a more efficient and less intensive approach. Businesses in these off-grid locations faced significant challenges accessing utilities, often requiring expensive investments to connect to power grids or relying on environmentally detrimental generators.
THE SOLUTION
Recognising the need for innovation, Xerogrid turned to Digital Enterprise for support and grant funding.
We enlisted the help of Leeds-based Hark and their leading energy management and industrial IoT software to bring the complex connectivity and control requirements to life. This advanced software takes inputs from solar, wind, and backup power sources to give users comprehensive control of the data.
IMPLEMENTATION & IMPACT
The software is a plug-and-play addition to the systems Xerogrid supplies across sectors including food production, eco-tourism, and manufacturing. Hark Systems also provided Modbus Protocol training to allow Xerogrid to strengthen existing monitoring systems. Xerogrid will then licence this tailored software to end users for an annual fee, creating new revenue for the business. With British software and tech support to bolster their offer, Ian and the team can confidently reassure clients about data and asset security.
The impact of the software has been remarkable. Not only has it unlocked the potential of renewable energy sources and improved reliability across Xerogrid’s operation, but it has also supported a significant step in the UK’s transition to net zero. Businesses in remote locations now have a viable, efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional generators and utility connections.
GROWTH & EXPANSION: THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT
In 2008, Ian transformed a rural Spanish property without utility connections into a pioneering off-grid, solar-powered system.
Two years ago, Xerogrid’s turnover was £350,000. Today, it’s £1 million; and they’re just getting started. Xerogrid hopes to hit £5 million turnover in two years and £10 million in five years, expanding its workforce from 5 to 12 employees.
These goals would not be possible without digital investment. The new platform has enabled Xerogrid to offer an energy management service that saves significant time and money and creates new jobs.
“We’d absolutely recommend Digital Enterprise to any eligible businesses. Charles was really helpful when it came to how to use the money and make the most of the grant. We got the money back in just ten days which was incredible. We hope to grow our team by at least two people in the next six months and are genuinely grateful to Digital Enterprise for fuelling the continued growth of our business.”
